I’ve been working on a few little projects lately, which have been eating up most of my spare time.
For one thing, I’m planning another overhaul of this website. Changing operating systems, servers, etc. The new site is just about ready to launch and I like it, but more importantly it will make things easier on me in the future. I’m leaving EE and going back to WordPress, which is not the easiest thing to do, but I think the benefits will outweigh the pain in the butt that the migration has been.
Also, I’m making bows. Lots and lots of hair bows. And handmade cards. I’ve entered my first craft fair, the Nutcracker Craft Faire here in Homer. I keep hearing people talk about it, so I thought I’d give it a shot and maybe make a little money for Christmas gifts. At least, I was hoping that would be the case, but I’m finding that crafting is so expensive that I’m going to have to sell a lot of bows and cards to make any profit at all.
On the bright side, the craft work is giving me something to do with my hands while Jens and I catch up on Lost in the evenings. I hate being idle while watching TV. We just finished Season 5 so I guess we should start looking for a new series to start when we get through Season 6. Any suggestions?

Well, there’s no actual “prize” per se, but they will use my photo in next season’s tourist catalog.

We lost power last night for about 4 hours. The entire city went dark, except for the Safeway and the gas station. They must have generators.
This is the first time since we’ve moved here that we’ve had a power outage, though I have heard it happens frequently during the winter for some reason. It made me realize a few things:
- When there are no lights in evening, it gets really dark here. No seriously. REALLY dark.
- You can never have too many tea lights.
- When the power goes out is not a good time to discover that you don’t have a single working flashlight.
- Desktop computers don’t handle sudden power outages as well as laptops with batteries.
- You don’t realize how much you use electricity until you don’t have it. For instance, while trying to find the matches, Jens tried turning on the light so he could see better. And while sitting on the couch in the dark being totally bored, I thought, “Well, I should use this time to do laundry.” That didn’t work out for me.
- All the candles in the world won’t make enough light to work on craft projects.
- When the electricity comes back on for 10 minutes, and then stays off for another 2 hours, it’s way more frustrating than if it had just stayed off. Especially if you’re in the middle of, say, cooking a bunch of chicken when it goes off again.
- My kids are silly.

Mr. Presumptuous might be in for a big surprise.
Dear Joe,
You might think it exudes confidence to visit D.C. 2 months before the election and start calling elected governmental officials “future colleagues,” while making comments about looking for housing and changing out the name plaque on your office.
The rest of the state, however, is less than impressed by your complete inability to separate “confident” from “presumptuous” and “total butt munch.” Especially since you run probably the greatest risk in the history of EVER of being beaten out by a WRITE IN CANDIDATE.
A little advice on that… If a large population of your state is kept afloat by federal funding, it’s probably not a great idea to make one of your goals to DO AWAY WITH all that funding. Just sayin’.
So while you’re out looking for office furniture, the voters of your state will be learning how to spell “Murkowski.” Good luck with that.
Hugs & Kisses,
You’re probably glad I can’t vote in this state yet
PS…Those “I HATE U, U SUK FUR MAKIN MAI LIFE HARDUR U STOOPID” emails you keep getting? They’re from your publicist.

Hey guess what? This photo won the Wildlife category of the Homer Photo Contest, an annual amateur photo contest run by the Homer Chamber of Commerce. At least, I think it was this photo – the man from the CoC said it was an eagle landing on the beach and I think this was the only one I submitted that fits that description.
Honestly, I entered the contest several months ago and don’t remember which photos I entered, or exactly what the “prize” is – but I believe they use the winning photos in the tourist magazine for the following season. So it looks like one of my eagles will make it into real, live, bona fide PRINT.
I’ll add more detail when I talk to the man from the Chamber of Commerce, which should be sometime next week.

“Kaelin, do you remember the day Koren was born?”
“No. I think I blocked it.”

“Papa, how old are you today?”
“I’m 57.”
“Oh. Is that, like, when you die?”

“Koren, you know what’s really funny about you? When you say NO, you always don’t usually mean no. And that really bothers me.”
