Blocking Visits from Google Images

Filed under: Blogging,Photography,Teh Internets — Amy @ 4:23 pm

At approximately noon yesterday, I became a single mother.

At least until the end of the weekend. J is off to Minnesota to visit some friends, so it’s just the girls this weekend. Enter multiple binging sessions of pizza, cookies and Veggie Tales. Well, minus the pizza and the cookies because they are SO not on my diet. Ok, maybe some pizza and cookies. I’m not that good.

[queue random change of subject]

I hate Google Images. I get tons of hits to my site through them and it irks me because I don’t want that kind of traffic. I don’t want people getting to my site who are only here to steal my pictures. My Rome pics seem to be the most popular, but I don’t want that kind of surfer browsing through all my pictures of Kaelin either.

So in case anyone else is having this same problem, I found and modified this bit of code, and then inserted it into my header. And voila! No more hits from Google Images.

<script language=”javascript” type=”text/javascript”>
var camefrom = document.referrer;

var findit = “images.google”;
if (camefrom.indexOf(findit) > -1 )
{ window.location=”http://www.google.com”; }
</script>

It basically checks the referrer of any visitor to my site and if it’s someone coming from Google Images, they get redirected back to the Google.com home page. I would love to give credit to the creator of this spiffy little code, but I found it on some random forum site, and (as is my unfortunate habit) accidentally closed the browser window too soon.

Stupid WordPress problem (the problem is stupid, not WP…I heart WP) has been plaguing me for a few months now and I was really hoping the upgrade to the latest version would help, but it didn’t, but I FIXED IT!

I found the answer and I FIXED IT!

And no, I’m not going to tell you what it was because then you’ll be like, “Oh, was that all?” instead of what you should be thinking, which is “Wow, you must be some kind of WordPress GURU!”

That is really what you’re thinking, isn’t it? Because come on, y’all, I FIXED IT!

Notice Anything?

Filed under: Blogging,Health...or Lack Thereof — Amy @ 3:42 pm

So I finally got around to changing the look around here, since Winter in Texas ended in, like, November.

I don’t know how long this theme will last though, as it’s an official hat-tip to my new health program… which I also don’t know how long will last.

In general, I’m a lot better at starting a process than finishing it. For instance, this morning I needed to bring a piece of paper to work with me. I brought it downstairs, made it to the kitchen counter with it, but managed to get in the car without taking it with me.

A lot of my projects go the same way, which is why I probably should never be in business for myself.

And diets. I’ve developed a singular talent at abandoning diets without even realizing it.

I’ve been pretty diligent over the past 2 weeks about getting some exercise and watching my calorie intake, and so far I’ve lost 4 pounds. That’s actually a lot for me.

So now J and I have started this new program. It’s a cleansing/weight-loss/ health program – one of those “2 shakes, some pills and a sensible meal” per day things that we’re embarking on in the attempt to shed a few pounds and be generally healthier.

It’s a 30 day program but we’re only doing it for 15 days because we could only afford one kit for the 2 of us and that’s how the math works out.

And after tasting one of those “shakes” this morning…I’m not sure I can handle more than 15 days anyway.

Protected Work Posts

Filed under: Blogging,Work — Amy @ 11:22 pm

Ok, the internet is seriously screwing around with me tonight in both FireFox and Opera and I’m not even going to try Internet Explorer.  So I’m going to try posting this one more time and hopefully it will make it to the page without totally disappearing or going haywire with glitches.
Some of you logged in registered users may have noticed that I’ve started posting about work again.  I took a hiatus from that because of confidentiality reasons, but now that I have the ability to semi-moderate who reads that stuff (thanks to Protected Posts capabilities) I’m feeling a little more relaxed about sharing things (such as the previous protected post) that I wouldn’t normally tell the whole world about.
So promise me you can keep a secret 😉

Admin Stuff

I fixed the feed links in my sidebar.   Apparently the WordPress php I was using wasn’t actually working.   So they should be active now.   I have yet to figure out how to successfully get a feed for the Private/Protected posts, since they don’t appear to be showing up at all in my feed reader.   Are any of you guys getting any kind of indication when a protected post has been published?

!!! Important !!! – New Protected Posts Stuff

Filed under: Blogging — Amy @ 1:32 pm

I’ve decided to start implementing “Protected Posts.”   Because there are just some things I’m not comfortable having out in the open for any passerby to see.

So here’s the deal:   If you want to see the protected posts, you have to be:

  1. Registered (Registration link is in the “Meta” section of the sidebar)
  2. Approved (only in some cases)
  3. Logged in

Even if you’re registered, if you view this blog without logging in, you won’t see any of the protected posts.   They will be totally invisible, incognito, hidden, etc.

If you view this blog via Bloglines or another feed reader, you may or may not get notification that a “Protected Post” has been posted.   I haven’t tested that yet.   If you do get notification, it will only appear as the title of the post, without the content.

I posted a “protected” post just before this one, so if you’re registered and logged in, you should be able to see that one.

Inclement Weather and Other Tidbits

Filed under: Blogging,Such is Life,Teh Internets — Amy @ 2:29 pm

The Boss sent us home. He called this morning and was incredulous that we had even showed up for work in this “terrible” weather.

Texans turn into total weenies when it comes to weather. It took me twice as long to get to work today because everybody was driving 20 mph (or less). It was slightly snowing, but nothing bad. The roads were fine. And now that it’s all but totally melted off, I’ve been sent home from work.

Not that I’m complaining. I just don’t get it.

Internet Explorer sucks. The I-SERIOUSLY-HATE-IT-AND-WHY-THE-HELL- HASN’T-IT-BEEN-BANNED-FROM-THE-INTERNET brand of SUCKS. It’s a stupid piece of crap that can’t read code and should have gone out with the 8″ floppy disk. Can you tell I’m working on blog designs? Figured.

In other news, I just realized that this month marks my 2-year blogiversary. How should I celebrate?

New Theme

Filed under: Blogging,Such is Life — Amy @ 2:15 am

Well, I finally got my butt in gear and ditched the Christmas theme.   The new one is kind of a joke because winter this year has been rediculously mild…but I decided to go for the Winter theme anyway in the hopes of encouraging it to snow here sometime before spring.

It’s not totally done yet…there’s still a section I need to add and there’s something funky going on with my Blogroll links.   But it’s after 1am here and I don’t think too good in the middle of the night.   So I’m off to bed.

A heartfelt thank you to all those who left messages of well-wishes regarding the Rome trip – it was fabulous and one of these days I’ll get around to posting about it…just not today.   It’s my habit to personally respond to all the comments left here, but unfortunately I just haven’t had the time recently.   So this is me voicing my (im)personal (but sincere) appreciation for your thoughts.

And now, the bed, it is calling me.   Provided I can peel my cat off my lap.

The Cool Kids Club

Hey, good news! I’ve been offered (and have of course accepted) a job as part of the Weblog Design Studios team! WDS is the place to go to get great designs for all kinds of blogs. When I see a great template on the web, most of the time I find that it has come from WDS.

I have moved my premade templates to their website and have already sold one. For the most part, I’m going to be doing PSD layout work to start, since that’s what I have more experience with. But I hope to move into full-fledged designing soon, once I master the coding aspect of the other blogging platforms.

Feel free to check out their site – you won’t be disappointed! And they’re still looking for designers so if you have the skills, head on over there and apply.

New WordPress Themes

Filed under: Blogging,Teh Internets — Amy @ 11:20 pm

This is the first year that I haven’t had a full-time job – ergo, this is the first year that I have zero money for Christmas.

Therefore I’m starting a new attempt to raise some money so I don’t have to give Kaelin a cardboard box for Christmas.

Not that she wouldn’t be thrilled with a cardboard box. But J wouldn’t care for one. His tastes are a bit more…complex. Grownups are weird like that.

So anyway, I’m selling premade WordPress Themes. …Or rather, I’m giving away premade WordPress Themes in exchange for a donation to the Kaelin’s Family Christmas Fund. Any takers?

Ok, since I haven’t heard any complaints from the 5 of you who read this blog, I’m going ahead with the “Christmas in November” motif.

If it bothers you, just look at this instead:

About Me

Hi. I'm Amy. I started this website in 2005 as a place to deposit my journal and photos. It has gone through a few incarnations and masquerades as a family site, but since I'm the only one who contributes to it, it's really all about ME, ME, ME.
